The Treasures of the Shrieking Shack: The True Wealth of Agatha the Banshee

While there’s no official record of her death, I’ve always assumed that Auglathla’s sorrow-bound existence as Agatha the Banshee predates the founding of Conyberry in 1351 DR.

Since the events of Lost Mine of Phandelver take place in 1491 DR, it’s entirely possible she’s been haunting the woods around the village for two centuries or more. She might be a couple hundred years old. She might be a thousand.

But let’s take the conservative view and assume her legend didn’t begin until Conyberry was founded, well over a century ago.

Sister Garaele knows that, for the right trinket, Agatha can be persuaded to share her knowledge. The priestess knows this because the Harpers have tasked her with approaching the banshee bearing a jeweled comb as a gift, hoping to persuade Agatha to divulge the whereabouts of Bowgentle’s Book.

But are the Harpers the only ones aware of this quid-pro-quo arrangement? Probably not.

Agatha may be known in legend as a banshee, but what if that’s not how everyone understands her? What if, to some, she’s simply a mysterious woods witch who trades wisdom for beautiful baubles? She’s said to be a capable diviner. What if others sought her out for glimpses into their past or future?

Because let’s be honest – it’s unlikely Sister Garaele is the only person who’s brought Agatha a jeweled comb (or something like it) over the decades or centuries in exchange for hard-to-find knowledge. If Agatha has been conducting this quiet trade for years, she could be sitting on an impressive cache of treasure at the Shrieking Shack.

We know that in 1380 DR, Agatha traded Bowgentle’s Book to a wizard named Tsernoth. For context, Bowgentle’s Book contains over fifty spells.

Think about how often you’ve awarded fifty spells as treasure. Or how often you’ve seen something like that as a player. It’s not common – certainly not in published adventures.

Which raises a natural question: how large was the wagonload of riches Tsernoth brought to Agatha’s doorstep in exchange for Bowgentle’s Book?

If Agatha is the sort of banshee who hoards beautiful things, then her refuge in the Neverwinter Wood ought to glitter with them. So let’s do this. Let’s create a hoard for Agatha the Banshee.

A hoard so splendid that Venomfang would find impressive, and perhaps envy? Below are tables of items that can be spotted among Agatha’s hoard.

Inspiration for the following lists is taken from The Mother of All Treasure Tables, by Frog God Games.
