An artisan’s knowledge of Phandalin and its hinterlands would likely be sourced from campfire tales, ballad lyrics, old folk plays, and conversations overheard at inns and taverns across the Sword Coast.

Intelligence (History) – Entertainer Background (Phandalin Lore)

DCDifficultyWhat the Entertainer Might Recall
10EasyYou’ve performed in Phandalin before – or at least passed through the town. These backwaters all blend together in your mind at some point. You do recall that it’s a humble town with a growing audience and a thirst for songs, stories, and news of the wider world.
15MediumThere’s an old Dwarven ballad you learned called “The Last Echo” about a mine that collapsed under an orc attack. It names the mine “Wave Echo Cave,” and laments how it has been lost in time.
20HardA traveling bard once shared a rare passage from the text of something called “The Phandelver Pact” – which governed a legendary alliance between dwarves, gnomes, and humans who crafted not just treasures, but “magic bound by rhythm, flame, and faith.” Whether the words used to describe these treasures were literal, or merely symbolic, have been a topic of interest among those familiar with such esoteric lore for ages.
25Very HardYou once eavesdropped on a tavern conversation between an old elf and a trio of dwarves. The elf spoke in some detail about his visit to Wave Echo Cave centuries ago, and the wondrous magical device located therein known as the Forge of Spells. He described the forge’s magic, and the strange music it made when put to its purpose. “The hammers fell like thunder, the anvil rang like bells.” The elf suspected that some magic of the forge may have been musical in nature.
