A charlatan’s knowledge of Phandalin and its hinterlands would likely be sourced from other charlatans speaking aloud with their dodgy colleagues about where to find some rubes, card games with unsavory folks, eavesdropping on conversations, or ill-gotten troves of old deeds and documents.
Intelligence (History) – Charlatan Background (Phandalin Lore)
| DC | Difficulty | What the Charlatan Might Recall |
| 10 | Easy | Phandalin’s a backwater full of naïve miners, fresh settlers, and just enough coin to make a clever person rich – if they know how to appeal to basic human nature. |
| 15 | Medium | Rumors circulate about a lost cave full of magic and treasure near Phandalin – Wave Echo Cave. You’ve heard several conflicting stories in taverns about its supposed location in the shadows of the Sword Mountains. |
| 20 | Hard | You once skimmed a forged document – or perhaps a real one – that made mention of the “Phandelver Pact,” an agreement between dwarves, gnomes, and humans to share in the wealth of a powerful forge located in Wave Echo Cave, said to turn even the works of the least skillful smiths into “priceless relics.” |
| 25 | Very Hard | You know a tale that most think is a con: the so-called Forge of Spells was used to craft divine-quality magic items. There are those in the world who’d pay a fortune for anything even remotely resembling an artifact from such a magical forge. |
