Yesterday’s article on Claugiyliamatar got me thinking: what if a dragon could modulate its breath weapon as it got older?
Previous editions of Dungeons & Dragons state that a green dragon’s breath weapon is a poisonous chlorine gas. But what if over the centuries, a dragon could master its breath weapon to produce other gases with other effects beyond respiratory damage in its target?
Ammonia is a gas. What if after a few years, the green dragon wyrmling masters its breath weapon in such a way that it allows a young green dragon to decrease the lethality of its halitosis to be more of an irritant in an effect akin to Stinking Cloud?
Nitrous oxide is a gas. Perhaps in the century it takes for the young green dragon to mature into an adult green dragon, it further masters its breath weapon to allow for a euphoric effect comparable to Tasha’s Hideous Laughter.
Halothane is a gas. After a millennia of maturing to a venerable age, an ancient green dragon has such mastery over its breath weapon that it can produce an anesthetic effect akin to a Sleep spell, without harming targets under its effect.
It’s all about refinement over time. As a wyrmling, the green dragon has little control over its breath weapon. But perhaps through each stage of its life as it matures over decades, centuries, and millennia, the green dragon gains a mastery of over its breath weapon in ways that allow it to choose between lethality or other effects.
This would allow a green dragon to control any situation on its own terms – which is perfect for a dragon type known for their vanity, and for being masterful manipulators and schemers.
