One more of Sister Garaele’s spooky stories before we move onto other topics. The last one from the cutting room floor: will-o’-wisps.

“Take care when venturing out of doors past nightfall, children. But most of all, beware the luring lights. Some believe they are fairies, leading travelers to forgotten treasures in the night. Others say evil spirits attend these flames, leading the unwary into bogs and mires, to be swallowed up and lost forever.”

This one works better with Dragon of Icespire Peak, which has a will-o’-wisp encounter in it (Dragon Barrow). But if you’re creating your own adventures between the High Road and the Long Road, there’s the Mere of Dead Men down to the south on the map of the Sword Coast. Perfect for a hex crawl, where will-o’-wisps can lead the party into all kinds of dangerous situations.
