Wait, WAIT…hold up. Has anyone actually looked at the Dragon Barrow map and done some math? Based on my calculations, Azdraka was MASSIVE.

It’s not hyperbole to say that he may have been the largest dragon in Faerûn. The largest dragon in FANTASY. Larger than Smaug! Larger than Balerion the Black Dread! From snout to tail, according to the map of the Dragon Barrow, he was 155 ft. long and had a wingspan of 200 ft!

By comparison, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is 186 ft. in length with a wingspan of 197 ft. Fighting Azdraka must have been like charging a Dreamliner that was coming in for a landing!

An adult dragon in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons has a size category of Huge. Now, there are some that might scrunch up their faces and winge “but a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner is huge.” And that would be true. But if we’re going by the size categories listed in the Monster Manual, Huge is a 15 ft. x 15 ft. monster.

Tiamat (grab a snack while I plod through the honorifics) The Avaricious, The Bane of Bahamut, The Creator of Evil Dragonkind, The Chromatic Dragon, The Dragon Queen, DEEP INTAKE OF BREATH The Dark Lady, The Many-Mawed, The Nemesis of the Gods, The Queen of Chaos, The Queen of Evil Dragonkind has a size category of Gargantuan, which is 20 ft. x 20 ft. She’d be the size of a house cat next to Azdraka. You’d need a gallon of paint and primer to decorate Azdraka’s monster mini, because it would be as large as a Roomba on your battlemap.

Clearly, either Jason A. Engle or Mike Schley didn’t think this through when they drew this map. Or perhaps they sat down at the drawing board shortly after a dental surgery or colonoscopy and went back to work a little too early that day. Hasboro’s intern certainly didn’t catch this in QA either. But that’s okay. I’ll roll with it. You know, rule of cool.

  1. I don’t feel like the barrow is meant to accurately represent the size of the dragon, any more than a IRL barrow represents the size of the human(s) entombed there.
