Bowgentle’s Book is certainly worthy of a quest. This tome is an absolute treasure hoard of arcane magic. A dragon should be sleeping on top of it!
Egads! This spellbook contains 50 (FIFTY!) spells, from cantrips to 6th level spells. Can you think of any other loot drop in a published adventure that approaches that level of holyshitballsness? You won’t even get that kind of score out of a lucky draw from the Deck of Many Things!
So, why would Sister Garaele (on orders from the Harpers) want information about Bowgentle’s Book? If you’re interested in taking the party to the Tyranny of Dragons after they finish Lost Mine of Phandelver, you could tie it to the dragon cultists at Thundertree. According to the Harpers, they’re believed to be seeking the spellbook, as well as other famed magic items for Tiamat’s hoard upon her rumored return.
With this as the premise, the cultists in Thundertree are in the vicinity of the Triboar Trail for two reasons: to notify Venomfang of Tiamat’s impending return. And to travel to Conyberry, intent on learning the location of Bowgentle’s Book from Agatha the Banshee.
Having acquired this information from their spies, the Harpers have charged Sister Garaele with this errand in a race against time vs. the dragon cultists. Her orders are to either secure the spellbook, or to assure that it is beyond the grasp of the cultists.
The majority of the spells contained in Bowgentle’s Book can be found in 5th Edition. Just seven of the spells aren’t included in 5E – the perfect opportunity for a Dungeon Master with an affinity for homebrewed spells to put their stamp on a famed magical tome!
