Who was Venomfang’s sire? Who was his mother?

According to Forgotten Realms lore, there are only three green dragons who have inhabited the region of the Sword Coast as it is shown in Lost Mine of Phandelver:

There’s Venomfang, the young green dragon residing in Thundertree.

There’s Claugiyliamatar, otherwise known as “Old Gnawbone,” an ancient green dragon who resides in Kryptgarden Forest, south of the Sword Mountains.

And then there’s Azdraka, the slain adult green dragon who lays beneath the Dragon Barrow southwest of Thundertree.

That’s it for green dragons known to inhabit the map below.

Azdraka was slain by Lady Tanamere Alagondar “over a century ago.” It’s not far fetched to conclude that Venomfang is the offspring of Claugiyliamatar and Azdraka, and that Azdraka was slain when Venomfang was a hatchling (or in the egg if, at the time of Lost Mine of Phandelver, Venomfang is a young dragon on the cusp of sprouting into an adult dragon).

Azdraka has not been assigned a gender, so if you decide to use this bit of lore in your game, it’s easy enough to designate Azdraka as the male in the coupling that produced Venomfang. Claugiyliamatar is female.

If Azdraka was the sire of Venomfang, it could put an interesting spin on the Dragon Barrow side quest in Dragon of Icespire Peak.

Maybe Venomfang has something of value to trade with the characters, and convinces them to retrieve the sword that slew his sire a century ago, as an heirloom of his family.

Or perhaps Venomfang wants the sword simply to destroy it, either for its infamous connection to his family history, or for its deadly properties. It is a dragon slayer sword, after all (+1 sword which deals an additional 3d6 hp of slashing damage when striking a dragon). And it has actually slain a dragon.

I can’t imagine any dragon just wanting something like that laying around nearby. If the dragon slayer sword were ever to emerge from the Dragon Barrow, Venomfang would be well-served to assure it is on his terms, when he is prepared to accept it in a trade or, if the situation went awry, defend himself against it.

Or perhaps Venomfang knows the dangers that lurk within the Dragon Barrow, and plots to pounce on a weakened party once they emerge with the sword.
