Random Encounter: Rider In The Rain

Galloping hooves pound the sodden earth as a rider races west along the Triboar Trail in a deluge of rain.

If the party has horses, the rider will halt and inquire about trading his tired steed for a fresher mount, offering an additional 10 gp in the exchange. The rider will not speak of his errand under any circumstance, but a successful DC 12 Wisdom (Insight) check senses that his need is urgent.

Regardless of whether he procures a fresh mount or not, the rider does not linger with the characters long, and departs within minutes as he continues his flight to the east.

Development

The rider is fleeing a revenant, which had pursued him to Triboar three nights ago, seeking to exact vengeance upon their murderer. An hour after the rider departs, the revenant walks past the party on the trail, paying them no mind as it grimly trudges east down the trail.

If the party attacks the revenant, it will defend itself with its fist attacks. In the event that the revenant defeats the characters, it will not fight with lethal force, instead leaving characters reduced to 0 hp unconscious, then continue the vengeful pursuit of its murderer. If no one is present to revive unconscious characters, they awaken 1d4 hours later.
